A thread below called "flimsies" is probably referring to the travails of the "Stourbridge Line," a tourist passenger operation of the Wayne County (PA) Chamber of Commerce between Lackawaxen and Honesdale (ex-Erie) using ex-BAR BL-2 54.

Basically, there is no freight business to share the expenses. Here are the links to the Scranton Times articles:

Or you can open their main site:

then open "Advanced Search" for "stourbridge" in the last 30 days.

It is sad how NIMBYs can shut down just about anything. Aside from our interest in seeing a rail line saved, I suppose no one cares about the potential jobs lost. Oh, I forgot - everyone works from home on the internet now!

Sorta mixed emotions on this one. We have a company in a city close by that produces flexible foam and sponges. As a result of their manufacturing process they have literally dissolved the storm sewers around the plant and seriously polluted the groundwater in the area. This has involved in constant groundwater monitoring and placed a real burden on the taxpayers and surrounding industries. What they really could use is some CofC work looking for industries that need a rail connection without the EPA problems and of course doing everything they can to improve the tourist attractions utilizing the railroad as a centerpiece.

Thanks for the links. I've been on that line once for a Fall Foliage trip. It would be a shame to see it go. Looks like I'd better plan to get up there this year, just in case.

The word in today's Pocono Record (I don't know if they have a website) is that the Pocono Mountain Vaction Commission has given them $70,000 to operate in 2003. They did state that this is a one time grant to allow time to find more permanent funding.

This is a bit of great news! Lets hope they can put something together now that they have some breathing room.
