Restored Train Car Transported to Gaithersburg Museum
Car will become Display Space for Community Museum

A Budd Car, an 80 foot stainless steel passenger train car, arrived in Gaithersburg in the overnight hours between January 12 and 13, 2012. The Budd Car joins the Community Museum complex in Olde Towne Gaithersburg, providing nearly 800 square feet of new space for museum programs, audio visual presentations and rental opportunities.

The Budd Car was restored and retrofitted by Worcester Eisenbrandt, Inc. at the B&O Railroad Museum's state-of-the-art restoration facility in Baltimore, constructed in 2005 to restore and maintain the museum's locomotive and rolling stock collection. The car is expected to be open to the public in early March.

Located in Olde Towne Gaithersburg next to the Gaithersburg Train Station on South Summit Avenue, the Museum includes the History Park, historic trains, and exhibits in the Freight House. Both the Station and the Freight House are on the National Historic Registry. The Museum's programs and exhibits are interpretive and interactive in nature, and focus on the cultural, architectural, economic, and political history of our community.

With the recent redesign of the Community Museum's Freight House, last year's arrival of a Bay-Window C&O Caboose, and the newly restored Budd Car, the Gaithersburg Community Museum will nearly triple in size. Additionally, the surrounding paved areas have been expanded, the decking replaced, and new benches, plants and lighting further enhance the site. The completion of the project will be commemorated with a public ceremony this spring.

The Budd Car renovation was funded by a $250,000 matching bond bill from the State of Maryland.
