Article is either yesterday or today. A sad decision, but probably the best we could hope for. I don't like the idea of low pressure steaming merely to blow the whistle. On the other hand, this gives all you Pennsy guys a further incentive to make a donation to support the restorations of either Long Island G5s #35 or #39, by writing a check to Oyster Bay Rail Road Museum or Rail Road Museum of Long Island, and specifically earmarking the funds for the steam locomotives. 39 is partially finished with her boiler repaired at Strasburg, while 35 is heading to Steam Service in Alabama, this year.

By support either or both of these locomotives, you will see PRR steam locomotives fired again.

Beyond the cubic sums of money spent on the K-4 to date, I'm kind of surprised, 'er shocked, at how much money the article claims has been spent on yard on track work because the property is not that large. So I'm left to conclude that the lion's share of the money was probably spent on structures and the turntable. I can appreciate a large sum of money going into the turntable, and specifically, the turntable pit. I remember seeing progress pictures on the museums website showing the construction of the pit and I was blown away at the extent of the reinforced concrete foundation work. The soil must be very week there in that particular part of Altoona. At any rate, it is hard to see how there could be a happy ending here.

You travel the K4 to a friendly branch line and run your excursion there, people will come. as for the boiler, 765 was given the 13 year makeover to bring to specs. I dont know the boiler construction for the k4 but true boiler design back then was different, but don't blow it off, engines that age are still running. never say never.
you want this K4 to run, stop wimping off and bloody do it!

Yes please--I've rarely posted here, but I wonder if there is a reliable update on the status. LAst I read the boiler was being tested at East Broad Top?

Yes, Steve, I could, but the following responses would be in reference to nothing. Suffice to say, the newspaper article was a false lead, a red herring, a dead issue. I have since been told that things are NOT as dismal as the newspaper article had lead readers to believe, and in fact, the Altoona paper printed a retraction of the piece a day or two afterwards.

That still does not mitigate the importance of supporting the two LIRR G5 projects, as they are determined to run both locomotives after a complete overhaul with proper boiler standards. I would advise people to contact the Railroaders Museum directly for further information on their most loved of all steam locomotives, K4s 1361.

Richard, you could always edit the subject line in such a way that it would discourage further comment.

Something like, "move along folks, nothing to see here"
