Railway News Preservation can be a part of Railway Preservation News. Don't worry, Richard.

I want to thank everyone for the way this thread was handled...

1361 is a hot point... big steam, no longer being rebuilt for operation, lots of government money spent... Boiler issues so far unresolved...

The whole thing handled well...

Randy

The boiler is at the East Broad Top. Just to be clear, the EBT is just a "hiding" place for it until the roundhouse in Altoona is completed. No work has been done by EBT employees, and likewise, no work is planned by the EBT.

They're converting the K4 to three foot gauge?!?!? (Sorry, couldn't resist...)

Ok, more serious question. I thought the museum at Altoona was fairly large. There's no place they could have tucked the boiler there? Or is it actually being "hidden" at EBT for some reason? (As in rather than simply being a convenient storage location.)

Maybe security, vandalism concerns. Maybe just avoiding an eyesore.

Here's an overhead shot of the Altoona RR Memorial Museum from Google maps. I'm not sure how current it is, but it looks like it's pretty tight quarters without much room for expansion. I'm not surprised they'd store the boiler offsite until they're ready for it.

I'm pretty sure this is from this past year at some point - you can see the rest of the land around the "shed" for the construction of the quarter-roundhouse, which got started in 2011.
