From the shape, it looks like an open platform business car, possibly Soo Line 49, which MOT advertised for de-accession last year. The E&LS flats may give a clue as to where it's going.

MoT is giving something up? 0.o

Glad to see something evidently going to a home (for that particular piece of equipment) where it will be looked after - the shrink wrap job is impressive and indicative of a level of commitment to the car's preservation.

The ELS reporting marks are the clue here. I think it is SOO Line office car #49, Barney & Smith 1911, steel sheathed with a steel underframe. The owner of the Escanaba & Lake Superior bought it when MOT decided it was one of the items it could dispose of a while back. Good to see it was well protected for the trip.

I find it intriguing, considering John Larkin already owns a full Soo Line heavyweight set. Wonder what he plans to do with it...

Well, given MOT's recent scrapping of a couple pieces also "Surplus" I'm glad it's going somewhere where it will at least be out of danger.

Where do they advertise things for sale? I'm still kind of pissed they cut up the AS-616 last year, along with several other pieces on site.

It's been in circulation for a couple of years, and discussed here before several times.

In the case of the AS-616 the museum was never able to arrange for it to be transported to St Louis from the west coast and no other group seems to have wanted it.

With regard to the Baldwin, just because it you may not have heard of it, does not mean that it did not happen. There is absolutely no reason to doubt the veracity of Mr. Goldfeder's assertions.

Well, it's kind of a double-edged sword. On one hand, they did publish it pretty widely back in 2009. On the other hand, I did not recall them seeing results. There can be reasons not to announce results, as private owners often want to remain private. However there is no reason not to admit the unsold items, so that late interest can be expressed.
Well, there's a reason and it relates to traditional auction practice, which ties back to pure capitalism: you don't want buyers seeing your hand. But this doesn't apply to our situation as nonprofits with a preservation mission.

Well if you are curious about certain items and what happened to them, you can always contact the Museum of Transportation. Even a simple e-mail asking of locomotive X or passenger car Y is still avaiable would probably yield results.
