Just to correct the impression that the "engine" on this train was a total failure, this propulsion system worked well enought to be tested at Pueblo for a period of time. It was complex, involving a flywheel energy storage system, but was not a complete failure as has been stated. It did not tour the country like the State of the Art (SOAC) cars and wasn't duplicated, but it did work.

Funny thing that "killed" the ACT-1 concept? Air conditioning system! In speaking with one of the designers, the cabin climate control was developed as an airliner-style system (rather than "land-based") and just didn't function properly. Who woulda thunk it? As mentioned, I always thought the flywheel energy re-generator had disappointed. Supposedly, not so.

In the mid-1980's, TVRM was avidly attempting to garner public support. Introduction of the ACT-1 was a stab at doing so. Upon arrival, there was a ribbon cutting with some fanfare involving many local officials. For many years the cars were popular on the "Discovery Trail" tour, but later became a safety concern. Too bad it couldn't be gifted to another more appropriate organization. It almost went to Texas, and Colorado, and.... But in the end, there was not enough interest/funding to make the move.

In "better days" (and it was bad even by then):
