I've seen them under load--not at all like this, but just as interesting. . .this was at a couple of steam shows, one in Smithsburg, Md. and the other at Berryville, Va. Both of these steam traction engines were hooked up to portable sawmills with a fat leather belt, and giving a demonstration of saw-milling. What was fascinating to see and hear what happened when the log on the carriage rolled into the spinning blade--the blade began to sing, the engine slowed down a bit, and then the governor would kick in and the engine would chuff louder and harder as it loaded up, then as the log came clear of the saw, the engine would speed up momentarily until the governor could cut it back, and then it returned to speed but with no load, just ticking over. There were smells, too--steam, valve oil, smoke, and the cedar smell of the log. A wonderful combination!

The lowloader belonged to Allelys Heavy Haulage who specialise in moving railway vehicles. The trailer was specially built for this work and has rails set flush in the deck to minimise both the overall height of the load and the length of the ramp which has to be built to get the locomotive on and off.

"I live in the wrong time": as a record collector as well as a railfan, I can usually come up with an appropriate "sound track" for just about any situation. How about "Born Too Late" by the Poni Tails, or "Things Ain't What They Used to Be" by Johnny Hodges? There are two by the Beach Boys: "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice."
