Nigel Day just sent me the latest photos showing what he's up to on the West Coast Wilderness Railway in Australia. These photos show the construction of the firebox bottom and burner for one of the locomotives so that it can burn waste oil.

These latest pictures as Hugh ( Thank you Hugh) says show the new firepan. The loco over the years has had several arangements. The oldest was a wier type burner and dated back to the 50's. It was restored in the 2000's with a Laidlaw drew burner. These had the cyclonic air tubes etc. This system is now worn out and out dated. Then the fuel was diesel but is now waste oil, filtered and cleaned. That change was mainly driven by the cost of diesel. The new fire pan is to my concept of turbulent air mixing through many pipes as close to the burners as posible. The air pipes all have belled out entrances to give better flow and the total air flow is designed to match that of the lempor which is better proportionaly than a traditional draughting arangement. The burners are mounted from underneath the firepan using a bayonet type fitting. this being a much better arangement than the old flange and bolt system where you can not hold the burner up without doing you back in. The new arangement has two burners as the box is rectangular. The air pipes will in time be protected by refractory. Not yet fitted are the atomising super heaters. The burner in the picture will be fitted to #5 and is similar to the one used at MW. It has been modified to suit waste oil. #3 will use two burners half the size of this one. The technology with in is baised upon Lempor theories and uses internal atomisation rather than the external atomisation of a weir burner. Aditionaly there are new fuel valves which have a very fine cam system for fine fuel control.

The reprocusions of the testing of the modifications to #1's chimney are still being learnt and developed into #3's Lemprex and I only use that name for it as now its definatly not a lempor.
