Surviving War Department Design Locomotives

The Fort Benning engine was not used over seas durring the war. There are no surviving American locomotives here in the US that actually saw service overseas. There are however quite a few Axis locomotives here that were part of the reporations.

While the Fort Benning engine didn't go overseas, it's still a design meant for foreign use from the WWI era, so I included it for that purpose. As for the German engines, I'll have to do some serious research before I can compile a list.

For those intrepid few modeling WWI trench warfare, at the IRM Pullman Library we have drawings by Standard Steel Car (Butler PA) and by Haskell & Barker (Michigan City IN) of the 60 cm gage (~ 2 ft) freight cars: flat car, box car, gondolla, and tank car that were designed for that operation. They are all low profile, double truck with rounded car ends and long slender drawbars to snake around the curves below grade so as not to be seen. These cars with the locomotives would make a great exhibit layout, say, at Colonel McCormick's Cantigny Park in Wheaton Illinois! One more in the UK to add to the list. Awaiting restoration at Statfold Barn near Tamworth UK is BLW 44657/16 class 10-12D 4-6-0T ex Ryam sugar factory, Bihar, India in March 2013.

Currently in a VERY rusty condition it is very likely that full restoration will take place.

Model Engineering (the British mag) is currently running a series on constructing some well tank locos made by the Brits- an 0-4-0 for airfield construction and a similar 0-6-0 built in small numbers for the front.

I really don't think the Byron locomotive is in Monroe anymore, I haven't found anyone who can verify that locally, and I've talked with all the "ears to the ground" types around. I know that Dunn's "Narrow gauge to no man's land" book says it's still there, but I truly doubt it is.

I found the post within the Byron Locomotive thread, one of the most interesting mysteries we have yet to resolve, describing the location of this engine:

The person who posted this was a bit of a ghost (with just three posts, on this subject), perhaps they will return to post more info, but I think we are on our own to seek it out.

There is a good drawing of an Alco 2-6-2T (as there is of all the equipment used by the British forces) in Roy Link's recent book "WDLR Album" (ISBN 978-0-9565157-2-8) which I can thoroughly recommend. I have seen a drawing of a Baldwin gas mechanical somewhere - possibly in a Narrow Gauge & Shortline Gazette. Apart from "Moelwyn" on the Festiniog Railway there are two, in original condition, at Tacot des Lacs in France as is the only surviving Baldwin built 2-6-2T (5104) recently restored to working order.
I don't think anyone has mentioned the 5 members of the 'Joffre' class which are preserved in the U.K. Having served in France during WW1 these locos ended up in a quarry near Calais and were re-imported in the early 70's. Three are currently operational - one being at the Apedale Heritage Centre where there is a large collection of WW1 equipment. Didn't Statfold Barn actually import 2 Baldwin 4-6-0's from India?

I think by drawings we're looking for complete sets of parts drawings for reproductions.
