Have fun and take your pictures, but don't be stupid. A salty engineer once told me "Trains are perfectly safe, as long as you use common sense, don't do that and it's a good way to get in trouble real quick." So use it! It'll solve just about any situation you ever have, trains or otherwise. Case closed.

ADM4, you're right.....I retract my defense of the majority of the railfan comunity, because it is evidently as you say.

Are there plans for #610 to be used in mainline service when she is done?

Last I heard there are no plans to return 610 to servicer in the near future. Going back to an earlier post, if they were to ever return a bigger locomotive to service it would make more sense to go after the "A". It can go places the "J" can't because of axle loadings and the lesser rigid wheel base. Convert it to oil (to allow for fueling at any fueling rack), match water capacity to fuel (following mods to the bunker to allow for extended range via a high capacity oil tank) via aux tenders and away you go.....

Not that I'm holding my breath...... But that would be the ultimate in practicality.

That BLOWS!!!!! That means that ther is no longer any standard gauge army steam running....in the U.S. Oh well, at least we (army steam guys) still have Dollywood and Tweetsie.....

Sadly, both ADM and Brett are right. Unfortunately, this has degenerated into an argument.

A couple of thoughts before I lock the thread....

1) I suspect that British and American behavior and reaction to bad behavior may be different.

2) The problematic behavior around steam only shows its hold on the imagination of the public and railfan communities, and suggests why UP has kept a steam program and why NS is starting one... It attracts attention.
