But we don't need no steenkin event recorder.

Greg Scholl will be recording it anyhow......

Probably a computer could be fed with sensors to record such things as valve cutoff, steam chest pressure, train line pressure, speed and location from a GPS. I question whether this modern, lightweight high tech instrumentation is up to the rigors of steam railroading however.

For a diesel, about $8,000 plus installation.

Event recorders are not required on steam locomotives in the US. The cost is one reason (imagine C&TS or D&SNG having to buy and install 6 or 8 of them, plus the download equipment), the other is that it's somewhat impractical at present, unless someone of you wants to volunteer to eat the costs to develop one.

Speed indicators are required on steam locomotives that operate on the general system, and/or that operate at 20 mph or more. That is an indicator, not a recorder.

Now, having said all that, even though it is not required, there is nothing that prohibits a steam locomotive owner or operator from installing an event recorder if he wants to.

Hey Dude,

Count me in too. I'd love to see what this beautiful beast can really do.

Dave....I will.... Is your outfit providing some sort of Grant Money for me to cover some unknown event that I don't know about yet?

I have seen some footage of this engine in action in Canada(not the Vancouver-Calgary Trip), and she is pretty sweet! I enjoy watching her on home rails as God and CPR intended!

Steamingly,

Anyone else dislike this new name besides me. I hate to be negative, but I don't think she requires a nickname. The looks and sounds are all folks need to remember, and maybe the number!
Just my 28.16 cents worth! :)

For me, CPR only had one Empress: the Empress of Agincourt, the RSD-17.

And that's my 89.21 cents worth!
