Does anyone here know if efforts were made to reach out to museums before this happened?

Each of the cars had an above average restoration - and my instinct is to disagree with the article's assertion that the cars were given generic paint schemes. I saw them last year and they were all in great shape - no rust - the paint was barely faded - and looked as though they could have been rolled out of there with an inspection.

Now, we can certainly dispute whether that moving cost was inflated. But the other reality is that the "good ol' days" of picking up a bad-ordered and freshly retired car from the railroad for $250 (as one noted steam operation did for years a decade or so ago) are now gone. I could also dispute just how "vintage" the cars are. There's a yard full of older boxes than this across town from me, still available and able to be shipped by rail; the only problem is the B&O Museum has all they need.

Who says they're historic? Old, maybe (although from my perspective these are modern) but historic? By what criteria?

I have to agree with Dennis. A bunch of 1970's plug door boxcars with an incorrect lettering and paint job applied. Similar to the complex of cars at Yakima, WA.

Yes in 20 years people will be asking why nobody preserved these "historic" cars.

The caboose was saved and will be united with the CB&Q 4-6-0 #710. This is all part of a new sports arena project.
Amtrak will be moving into a new depot this coming week. Many tracks have been relocated for this project.

Interesting though, someone thought it a good idea to celebrate some old railroad names and heralds by painting up these cars. In a way, right or wrong, somebody was making a pro-railroad statement.
