Dateline Knoxville, TN 7:50 PM

Southern 630 and consist arrived in Knoxvlle today after an 11:00 AM departure from Bristol. While the steam locomotive performed quite well, the road slug had some issues with its dynamic braking. I don't think the problems will require scrapping of the diesels.

After this weekend of NS Employee Appreciation Excursions, the locomotive and train will deadhead home to Chattanooga on Monday and 630 will return to Missionary Ridge Local service.

N&W 611 is still in Roanoke.

End of Update

Whew, that's good to know. The "foamernet" has been heating up because NS has apparently moved one of VMT's E8's that is stored on their property. (rumors of a "Wabash heritage unit" for the business car train????) VMT isn't aware of anything happening with their engine, maybe NS just needed to store something else on that track. We'll be down at VMT for a while tomorrow working on logistics for the September run day, I'll verify Mark's report, make sure 611 hasn't moved......:)

Any idea of the route the 630 will take back to Chattanooga?

As a follow up to Mark's comments, the diesel/road slug set has dead dynamics making it unsuitable for passenger service. Three reinforcements have been summoned. 630 pulling South. KLW re-power, GP-38-2 and SD-40-2 (with working dynamics) pulling North. All is well, nothing to see here...

On a related note, "foamernet" is probably about to meltdown with E-8 discussion...

Are those the units re-engined with the MTU Tier 2/3-compliant prime movers? If you want to 'prime' the E-8 "banter," how about placing a pair of the MTU engines in an available E-8 body???

Yes, the KLW re-power does use a 12 cylinder MTU diesel. Supposedly KLWX 2250 is going to Roanoke soon for further testing. She is currently paired with NS 5519 (I think?) for side by side comparison in identical service.

While I don't doubt that an MTU diesel would fit neatly in the E-8, that is not what's happening and certainly not what I'd want in my E-8. Based on what I'm hearing, I have to wonder about seeing a 3,000 HP E-8 with a pair of 12-645 prime movers in it.... or in them....
