844 in action in Connecticut!

On Tuesday, July 24, 844 was in action at RMNE's Chase Yard in Waterbury, CT, pulling a passenger coach!

OK, sorry, but I couldn't resist.... look at the plate number.

Jason Hartmann's Jeep was used to reposition New Haven wood coach 1613 after it was unloaded from Silk Road's dollies. This car and New Haven wood baggage car 3844 were moved from Saybrook CT to Waterbury on Tuesday.

Took no effort to pull it either, I did put it in 4 Hi, didn't want just the rear wheels trying to pull on the gravel. The wheels didn't slip at all.

This is the wooden coach, it's in REALLY good shape too, the windows, doors and some hardware is inside the car. The structure and sides are incredibly solid.

Four-wheel indeed!

I remember a Ford commercial from the early '70s which showed a station wagon pulling THREE rather large freight cars. Two-wheel drive. Cushy candy-tailed rear suspension.

Of course, when you think of what the actual rolling resistance of some of these things are, 'Jeep tough' is not exactly mandatory. Shouldn't be difficult for example to pull a Niagara if four young ladies can, and that's a LOT bigger than a passenger coach...

While getting CNR 6213 ready for her move, we needed to move her around to get various parts of the running gear lined up with other parts of the locomotive. We used a come-along (tied to a fence post) and some car movers...

I never totally believed the women pulling the 4-8-4, roller bearings or not. I'm sure it takes a good deal of force to slide pistons in cylinders and valves in valve cages. Okay, maybe not the valves if the gear was centered, but still.

While I hate to say it, the team at Ford did one better with their new model of Ranger with a test in Australia. Suffice to say the footage says all.

Reminds me of the time in 1977 when I rode 4449 in Ohio. That's Chicago Transit 4449, one of the Cincinnati-built "L" cars from the 1920's.
