"Also, do any older gents here remember some discussion in Railroad magazine back in the early 60's about the possibillity of Rayonier, Inc. 2-6-6-2 38 being considered for use there? Would have made a good drag engine after conversion to coal.
Thanks for any help.[/quote]

I dont exactly know how rayonier #38 would end up on the east being she's always been on the west. While I may not be happy with her current deteriorating condition right now i'm glad she's not at the NCTM. She is right at home on the west coast as an oil burner.

Here is a quote directly from a April 2010 NCTM Roling stock summary.

Quote:
F. Put BC&G No. 4 parts together with the engine and tender by _____ Goal TBD. This project requires no funding, only human effort. This needs to be done to ensure that the engine can be reassembled without loss of parts and run again in the future.

Also in the report.

Quote:
• Negotiate a new home on an operating line-haul tourist railroad for BC&G 4 for best and highest use.

As far as I last saw the boiler is on the chassis, but the boiler it's self is incomplete. Much of the new fire box sheets are bolted on. #4 is a source of mixed feeling at NCTM, a lot of money was put into her and the question is if NCTM can ever afford to complete the repairs. BC&G #4 had high levels of boiler corrosion and the fear is that this has also happened to 1925. I personally saw flues removed from 1925 with large pits and some holes.

Another comment from the report.

Quote:
• The foundation board should be satisfied that a comprehensive water treatment program is in place prior to the start of steam operations.

Remember the report is from 4/2010 so many things may have changed.

SCVR - Try re-reading his post and you'll see he was speaking of the 38 going into service on the BC&G.

NCTM was not even around in the 1960s, let alone the 1940's/50's when this transfer of the 38 was under consideration.
