This post, like many of your other ones, sounds like a bunch of rumors with no basing. When I see proof, I'll believe it.

ask doug bailey, if you dont believe me or follow this link http://steamlocomotive.info/shownotes.cfm?Loco=519 may have been from over a month ago but no one else noticed. Also a friend on mine on youtube named glen is the one who pointed it out to me. I'll ask him where he got his info from.

heres an update from the my friend who visited the engine, heres what he said "I visited the sod house museum beside 3424 in Kinsley, KS. Buying the ticket I said, I always stop for steam locomotives. He said, "if you can move it you can have it." He went on that population of Kinsley is less than a quarter of what it was when they were given the engine, They no longer have people or money to keep it up. So the City of Kinsley owns the engine - they have the real story."

"If you can move it, you can buy it" is not really what I would consider a serious offer. If you went to the town and (with the resources to back it up) made an offer, there'd be a political hue and cry about "OUR" steam engine. Granted, it might get the town to do some cosmetic work on it, but don't seriously believe the engine is available.

FWIW, a scrapper could make a much better offer to the town for the engine if it came to that.

Still, if somebody has the cubic dollars to indulge in a project, and has a way to make it a "win win" for the town, then go for it. Otherwise, especially with another Pacific in running order not too far away, I think it is just a pleasant thought.

Here's a picture from the website of the Edwards County Musuem in Kinsley, KS. The "contact" page of that site directs inquirers to julieackerman@hotmail.com.

Did you not here the reason as to why they dont want it? Their towns population is a fourth of what it used to be! If the town doesnt want it who should stop them? I doubt they would let a scrapper take it if they really cared about the engine. Let a good group or private corporation buy it and let them deal with it. I'm sure if any of us had the trailers we would take it, i know I would but its a matter of "Where do you go from here?"

I happen to know the city manager of Kinsley. I will call him in the morning and ask him for the real facts. I saw the engine less than a month ago and it has a been painted in the past couple of years. The ag equipment display next to it has been cleaned up, painted and some display info added.

For the record, after talking with both the Mayor and the City Manager of Kinsley, Kansas ATSF 3424 is not available to who ever can haul it off and its not for sale. They take good care of the engine and are very proud of their historic ties to the ATSF main line.

Thanks John, for taking the time to get this straightened out. These rebuilt 3400 class Pacific's were really good looking locomotives. We should be lucky that one of them (the 3415) has been rebuilt to running condition. I've got to get out to Kansas one of these days, and ride behind her.

For the record, whoever posted the note for that locomotive as "Doug" wasn't me. I rarely if ever post notes on steamlocomotive.info, and only approve about 40% of the ones that are posted.

Just a follow up on this post. I had lunch with the the mayor of Kinsley this last Monday and we were talking about this post. He and several other city officals had a good laugh about it regarding the decline in the size of the town. He said that yes in fact the town and gotten smaller over the years after the engine came to them but with the growth of the oil industry, wind power and relocation of new industry in the Dodge City area to the west of them the town was growing. He also noted that there is no admission charge to the local museum next to the engine. I find it interesting that the individual that started this post has not responded in any form to the facts. I realize SCVR (real name unknown) its very easy to hide from your mistakes on the internet but admitting you made a mistake is the mark of a gentleman and a true railfan. If you want to make a difference in the preservation movement deal with the truth and reality not wishfull thinking.
