Anyone else think its funny how both the kettle moraine railway and oregon coast scenic railway both have a mccloud 2-6-2 and both have (had) heislers! Although the kettle moraine is defunctional the shops arent. The oregon coast scenic continues to prosper with the expected 2013 completion of 2-4-4-2 #7 "skookum" owned by Chris Baldo and the former niles canyon (PLA) Pickering 3 truck heisler #1 soon coming to oregon for restoration and use on their line. Seems both railroads shared some things and were successful to this day, well except the kettle moraine but the shops are still used.

The 91 is in service (last and largest of the heislers). I really don't think we want two of those wackadoodle contraptions on the railroad. At least I don't! ;)

Nothing new there. This industry is a pretty small world. Of course people are going to talk to each other.

How many miserable days and nights have you spent trying to keep a Heisler running?

I'd have any defect in my Shays fixed and the train out on the line before I got the gear cases dropped and opened for diagnosis on a Heisler.

I don't find anything about this funny, actually..........

Will you also be amused by different tourist lines running rod engines in different places, or are geared engines the only humorous ones?

For real laughs: There's a beautiful wood fired Climax on Puffing Billy in Australia, as well as the ones in WV and Stathi's "Humpy." The Australian one is the smoothest and nicest riding of them. It also blows smoke rings.

You're probably thinking of Climax #10, which we like to run, just not too often, as she is a Climax and they break often. She's in good condition.

The #10 they're speaking of is the first ever 3 Truck Heisler. She's never operated on the MRSR and probably never will...

I think "funny" was meant in the sense of "unique" "odd" or "unusual" rather than haha laughing funny... i.e. Both lines had essentially the same roster a McCloud loco and a Heisler, which a bit more odd than having say a couple of 0-4-0's....

Well, you have to admit geared engines are pretty funny... I think Rube Goldberg drew the design for the Climax for one of his cartoons. Some loggers in Cory, PA found the drawing, weren't in on the joke, and the rest is history!
