Trains News Wire has reported the passing of noted railroad historian William S. Young. A prolific and talented author, Young published a small circulation magazine through the 1960's and early 70's under several titles that in later years was simply named "Railroading"; it remains a treasured collector's item. Young chronicled short lines, steam, early tourist railroads and the eastern railroad scene with thoughtful and delightful prose. I believe his last effort was an exhaustively researched history of the Unadilla Valley Railway, published in 2009. I regret I never had the opportunity to meet Mr. Young, but I will always admire his work.

Not just intelligent writing and simple, elegant layout, but very good photography. And Young's own images were excellent as well. His magazines featured a number of well-known photographers, especially JJ Young Jr.
