I was doing a bit of surfing and found some great old footage of these old girls being shipped, unloaded, and running. I know the 9010 is under restoration, you can see her coming off the boat in this video.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

Here's a link to the photo section on the restoration crew's facebook page. I find it amazing that since brought to Niles, the KM went from hulk of metal to a respectable piece of equipment. Now, I know it's not done yet, but the 9010 is a testament to the capabilities in organization, fundraising, and volunteer mobilization that the PLA continues to show. To be honest, I first heard of the KM a few years ago when Henry Luna was on the TSG Multimedia podcast. To bad I can't find it anymore!
Edit: I just noticed I omitted to post the link. My bad!

The Facebook page of which he spoke is
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Southern- ... 95?sk=wall
It is maintained by Bob Zenk, noted Southern Pacific modeler, author and chief researcher for the 9010 project. Bob also drives down from Seattle as often as he can to get his hands dirty.

I recently visited Niles Canyon and saw SP 9010... Howard Wise has done amazing work... with the loco looking great, a newly fabricated nose (to replace the "camera car" conversion) on hand, and a report that correct, workable complete trucks had been located in France, making this a operable restoration.

10 years ago, Before Doyle got involved, I would have bet on a PA being restored before a Krauss... Howard is proving me wrong.

Howard is responsible for most of the diesel work in the Canyon... Check out the roster at http://www.ncry.org/roster/diesel.shtml

Thank you Randy but there are a lot of great people involved with these projects. Mostly, I yell and point. :-)

I usually attend the annual spring photo train operated by PLA. Does anyone know if SP 9010 will be ready for next year's photo train?

No, unfortunately it won't be available, there is just too much to do. We are shooting for 2014 when it will be 50 years old.

Having been given a cab ride in one of these rare beasts (SP yard, Bakersfield CA, 1967) I certainly look forward to seeing the sole survivor coming out of "rehab".

Thanks for the update. I'll plan on the 2014 photo train. Do you think that Clover Valley Lumber #4 will be ready for next year's photo train?

Unless something goes terribly wrong but I am not involved with scheduling locomotives for things. :-)
