While looking for material on concrete roundhouses, I came across a site of photos of various abandoned places. The places on this site include the Michigan Central station in Detroit, and a railroad that was abandoned in Alaska around 1907, with what is left of its locomotives and rolling stock still there:

Yup, a "well known" site, that is rediscovered from time to time. Search the threads for prior details.

The engines are ex-New York Elevated, and I believe they are "protected" in place as artifacts. That is, removing them is not high on anyone's list, and perhaps even prohibited.

It's not bog, it's tundra, below the surface is permafrost. It'll get your feet wet just the same, however.

And they are not lost, they're right where the last owner left them, assembled at the landing at the mouth of the Solomon River, waiting to be shipped out to whoever buys them. Been waiting about 105 years, now.

IIRC, all three locos have Belpaire boilers.

Do my eyes deceive me? Have the locomotives been given a coat of paint fairly recently?

I think in the photo where they look shiny, they are just damp. And looking at all the pix, I see my memory is going... only two of the three have Belpaire boilers.

I'm not sure about the protected part. A class A Climax that used to be there was collected by a private individual and shipped to Eagle River, where he restored it. This was prior to 1980 so things could have changed since then.
