I'm not sure on the Monon #412, but I know that Monon's 2-8-2 #524 ran on the KCS during WWII. I reviewed both KCS and L&A steam rosters and couldn't find any leased power, only purchased. The rosters were comprised by KCS history expert and photographer Harold Vollrath, whom my grandfather knew and obtained photographs from. I would imagine that any leased equipment would have been returned to their owners. If they weren't, they'd most certainly have been scrapped in Pittsburg, KS, at the shops, along with KCS's whole steam roster.

Randy -

Somewhere I have a list of the Monon engines that were leased to the Kansas City Southern, but I can't lay my hands on it right now. I recall that one of the engines was an 0-6-0, perhaps #37. And I think that there may have been a 2-8-2 listed, so that may well be the 524 you mentioned. The book "Monon, The Hoosier Line" by the Dozall brothers, has a Monon steam roster as of May 1946. Both the 524 and 4-6-2 #412 were listed, with the 2-8-2 shown as being retired in 1948 and the Pacific in 1947. Of course, this doesn't prove that they two engines actually came back to the Monon. They may have been retired while still on the KCS. I wonder if Mr. Vollrath took any photos of the 524 while running on the KCS?

There is a photo of #524 in the book "Kansas City Southern in the Deramus Era". I found it in the "Leases in and out" section. The last contact info that I could find on Mr. Vollrath is listed below. He's taken thousands of photographs and has sold many copies over the years.

Harold K. Vollrath
