@Junior, I would disagree with the generalization that only railfans patronize our mixed. Part of the joy of this thing is that families are showing up - minus Mom. Fathers with their children were over half of the patronage in August.

Every mixed is different in consist. Part of what we want to portray here is that there is a place in North America that has steam-powered mixed trains, twice weekly. There are no guarantees for the future, but our niche is steam and we would like to live up to that while we are able.

It's unique, it's steam, and (hopefully) making money. I think it's great.

Here's a video I shot on August 21 and 22, which includes Amtrak, the Strasburg passenger trains and several clips of the Wednesday morning mixed:

I'm not sure if this question was asked elsewhere, but are passenges on the mixed allowed to disembark at Leaman Place to take photos/video while the engine sets up the freight?

I attempted to make it in August with my nine-year old (who was just off a trip seeing NKP 765 on Horseshoe) with a hope of his being able to ride in the caboose. We weren't able to make it and now school in session, so perhaps next year. I'm tempted to go myself in a couple of weeks, but suspect he'd hate me for life if he didn't get to go! Kudos to SRC and Mr. Weaver for making this possible. Hope it can continue!

Nice to hear that other families are making the trip.

Bob

Kelly, any plans to expand the mixed train schedule for the forseeable future or will September be it? Looking into riding sometime next week.

Strasburg will continue the mixed trains through October, Wednesdays and Fridays at 0630.

It's very much worth it Jim.

I had a good time and then caught the first two regular passenger trains out at Blackhorse Rd.

Jeff,

I was actually there on the 4th of July for the first "announced" steam revenue freight of the summer.

I agree, it was definitely awesome to watch (even though it was only two cars deep plus the caboose), but I'm definitely looking forward to riding - the opportunity to disembark and do photos/videos is icing on the cake to me. All I know is that I'll be extremely tired that day. :)

Ladies and Gents,

For those of you who are not sure about going to ride a mixed freight...may I present Exhibit B (for Exhibit A, see my earlier post) - from this past Friday at Strasburg. Enjoy!

Just a quick thanks to the Strasburg crew for continuing the mixed train through October. As the only rider on Wednesday they certainly weren't making money with it. With the gathering light and fog, it made it a memorable experience.

Mixed Train

I just received word that there will be no mixed tomorrow, since NS will not be delivering any cars to us.

For Friday 10/19, there will be no mixed train as there will be no cars awaiting pick-up at the interchange.

Heads up always appreciated, thanks! Looks like a rainy day morning, anyway, though that has it's photographic opportunities.

Have any plans been made in regards to extending through to November or longer?

/Mitch
