4449 seems to be one of those engines that keeps going and going. It has been around all of my lifetime and I have always been fascinated with it. With its Form 4 coming up for renewal I wonder if anyone involved with the engine can share what sort of things might come up during the inspection that will need to be addressed? For that matter, what sort of repairs has it received over the last 38 years to keep it going and looking great. My compliments to all involved. Thanks. Travis

Travis, what is more interesting and perhaps the key to her current success is, she was a park locomotive for a long time, and not kept in the best of condition. Because of her celebrated design and color scheme, when time came to breath new life into her, support was forthcoming. She has excellent caretakers, too!

She has a heck of a new home and her future looks good.

Maybe it won't work out. But maybe seeing if it does will be the best adventure ever.

Looks like a great new shop site, and accessible! You could knock of work at your day job and easily spend the evening volunteering at the shop.

If one is to talk about 4449 condition before it returned to service one needs to discuss the efforts of Mr. Jack Holst in keeping the locomotives lubed. Unfortunately I could not find a mention of his efforts on the 4449 page but I did find it on the SP&S 700 page. All three locomotives bearings were in much better shape due to his efforts.

Respectfully

That guy gets a mention in the 4449 book that was printed about 1976.

Jack Monterey Holst was one of the most selfless people that I've ever had the pleasure to meet. He died in the summer of 1972 at the young age of 38, I believe.

I stayed at his house a couple of times while on leave from the USAF in the 60's and he always made it point to show me something interesting around the Portland area when I was visiting. He was well respected by all of the area railroads and that gave him access to them. What he did through the years on helping to take
some care of local steam pretty well fit the kind of person that he was in life.
