Well Les, I think it's an easy assumption that the Maumee & Western owns the car, as it probably came with the line when it came out from under Indiana Hi-Rail control, following the bankruptcly and sale of Indiana Hi-Rail assets.

There appears to be a small hopper, former covered hopper, on the Southern Railroad of New Jersey. I have seen the SRNJ mentioned a couple times here but have not been able to put all the pieces together to understand why it is the way it is.
Other railroad relics in NJ to be found on the link.

Probably a better discussion to have over pizza and beer than the web. It is quite a tale, complete with litigation, allegation and preservation.

Perhaps - and it would be nice - though I don't imagine a trip to Scranton in the next couple of years. Next time you are in the far West let me know and I'll find a Chicago pizzaria somewhere. Pizza in these parts is pretty bad by those standards.

Happened to see this photo taken by Jeff Terry of two hopper cars that don't seem to have been mentioned in this 2 year old thread:

The two cars are on a photo freight run earlier this month on the Boone & Scenic Valley in Iowa, but I am not sure if they are actually owned by the B&SV. For that matter, I am not sure that the other freight cars are either, as there is no mention on the B&SV website. Anybody know for sure? Or can anyone furnish the history on the cars? Thanks.

Les

These cars are all owned by the B&SV. On a side note thats the CGW tank car that was questioned in a thread on CGW tank cars.

Dan -

I asked this question over a year and a half ago and I had pretty much given up hope of ever receiving a reply about the two Hallett lettered hoppers . So thanks very much! And yes, I know that the question on the CGW tank car was answered in a separate thread. Good to know that the B&SV owns all of these cars.

Thanks again.

Les and all,

Talking to a local railfan, it seems that the Indiana Hi Rail had about 6 of these cars, purchased from the N&W..looking at that photo..that sure looks like the NKP reporting mark...faded. He also mentioned that this was the last of the older hoppers left, the others seemed to have disappeared.

Les and the forum

A few images of a two bay hopper in Boulder City Nevada... Not sure if this was included or previously discussed

I think I could make out M&STL very faded ..

Dean -

There WAS a link to a photo of a twin bay hopper in Boulder City included back in February in this thread. Hard to tell for sure if this is the same car, but it most likely is. Anyway, you have included three photos of the car and no need to link to another site, so that is much better. Also, that linked photo was taken nearly two years ago (September 2010) and the Minneapolis & St. Louis lettering appears to have faded away even more in the interim. That photo showed a faded car number of 303. I can't see a car number on your photos. Would be nice if the museum there in Boulder City would bring this car into the shop and restore it.

David -

I talked to a gentleman at the Maumee & Western back in April who told me that they did not own that string of cars (including twin bay hopper IHRC #9x0) but were storing them for a company that had purchased some of the Indiana Hi-Rail assets.

A recent post here on RyPN by Steven Butler about equipment still located at North Lake, Wisconsin on what was the Kettle Moraine Railway, includes a mention of a C&S (Colorado & Southern) USRA 55-ton two bay hopper car. No mention of the car number, but it appears that somehow this car was missed from this long thread on two bay open top hoppers. Wonder if anyone has a photo of the car?

I got a note today from Alex Huff advising that the three Milwaukee Road open top hopper cars on the Dakota Southern in Chamberlain, South Dakota have recently been scrapped by the new owners of the line. So scratch those cars from the list.
