Sacramento has piles and piles of elevation and mechanical drawings for various Harriman Mikes. I bought a few side elevation drawings for IC engines about a year ago.

I sadly have no recent pictures but a quick insert about 771 and the boiler issue.

Lets go ahead and say the boiler is more than likely a total loss. Granted I am in no way a steam locomotive expert, and its been awhile since I've been down to Grapevine, but last time I looked her over, the bottom edge of the smoke-box was rusted through pretty bad. To me that says its one dead boiler. Anyone else care to share?

I'll concur with your assessment. 771 retained its boiler lagging for all the years it was displayed in Victoria, with its attendant deterioration. At some point during or after its journey to Grapevine, the lagging was removed, confirming the damage. Questions arose concerning "shortcuts" taken with 771's movement [involving the locomotive's partial dismantling for shipment], the facts of which have faded with time.

Discussion was engendered briefly about inserting a new steel boiler "shell-within-a-shell" until the realization of involved costs rendered the idea moot.. To my knowledge, 771 awaits final placement as a display somewhere on the Grapevine property..

Assuming that her current position is on a piece of track in the middle of the adjacent parking lot with no connection to the turntable and the rest of the "yard"... http://www.flickr.com/photos/crown426/6655966669/ (Pic not mine) I'd say she is already there.

I remember when they moved it there too, they had to lay temp track down on the concrete of the parking lot and roll it there into its position you see today. Of course, afterwards they put a (C&O?) heavyweight behind it and a little more recent a "MOW Display" which contains a speeder and whatnot.

Dear God, at least cosmetically refurbish her. Her number boards should have inserts and her headlight made operable with a plexiglass window. Since she's in an active parking arena, perhaps a four foot or five foot deterant fence? At least she didn't get reduced to scrap.

Most people forget there were FIVE MK5's perserved. The Mike donated to Lafayette, Louisana was scrapped in the early 1980's

Looks like there is part of a grease cellar laying on the ground under the cab
