When we rebuilt SN 1005 at WRM, we re-sawed 12"x12" timbers recycled from an industrial site. That's the only practical way to get good old-growth wood at a realistic price. We have a large bandsaw so we can do the whole job in-house.

In addition to Dave's suggested equipment, the other "must have" item for this work is a metal detector to find buried nails before your equipment finds them the hard way.

Thanks everyone. We may have anew member who has a portable saw mill. Just have to find the wood.

Steamtown's wood shop is well equipped so tools are not an issue. Stay tuned we may be moving on this over the next year.

Les, Steamtown did add the wood to this year's budget. They have a local mill that makes the planks with the grooves. We will see if they get their full budget. If they do then we can help out with the restoration.
