Thanks everyone.
I spoke to Washington U yesterday. They confirm that #2554 is a no go.

I guess a lot more research will have to be done.

After studying the photo of #179 I am starting to suspect that the windshield may have been simply moved forward from its original position. There are some holes up in the bonnet that may confirm this. I will check that out closely on Saturday.
As the restoration moves forward more info may turn up.

Regards,
Scott K

Scott,

Here is an image of the vestibule on DCTS 0522 for comparison. The dash is constructed and installed as a single unit. It is attached to the front of the metal dash of the car.

I assume, since the transit properties were forced to make the change, they did it as cheaply as possible, without any relocation of equipment. The conversions of these old open platform cars needed to locate the newly required windows out ahead of the dasher to allow the goose-neck hand brake to clear the new windows. If you look at most open platform cars, the goose neck brake handle (typically the only brake in that era) rotates beyond the plane of the dasher, but above it.

Here is picture of an open platform car not modified at the Baltimore Streetcar Musem (from their web page) showing where the gooseneck is mounted and how it would interfere with a window added directly above the dasher.

On DCTS 0522 pictured above, the hand brake was moved from outisde mount on the dash to bring it inside the new windows.
