Please convey our admiration to all involved, for their spectacular and authentic restoration work in 2012.
The wreck photos are most detailed I've seen, and the modern comparison images are likewise, quite interesting. I found myself wondering if there were random chunks of coal on the slope!

I do hope 2013 will see 6167 completed and secured, and possibly under a shelter.

Richard, I was wondering the same thing! I wonder what sort of evidence could be unearthed at the site all these years later.

So just further quantify the wreck, Twenty freight cars, six box cars and 14 coal hoppers had derailed and piled up on both sides of the track bridge between the bridge and the crossing, a distance of about 200 feet!

Also, if you look at 6166's tender, it would appear that when she was hit by 6167, the force of the impact rammed her backwards maybe 30 or 40 feet, into the car immediately behind her, and you can see the remains of that car underneath the tender!

I finally got around to writing an update on 6167 for my website. Due to this past summer's extreme heat and rain, plus scheduling conflicts, very little has happened since my last update. However, we did manage to coordinate a work session in October and the last one for the year in November.

As for interpretation part of the project, I have added six spectacular photos of 6167's July 6, 1943 wreck to the site. The one photo of the 30 foot tall heap of coal hoppers I think says it all. I've also added over 20 photos of 6167 in excursion service, some of which are pretty spectacular, including several taken by James A. Brown. Click here for details.

Joe -

Thanks for the photos of the 7/6/43 head on collision of 4-8-4's 6166 and 6167. If I read the report on injuries correctly, it appears that only one person (an engineer on one of the two 4-8-4's) was killed. I also noted in the photos, that there was a Grand Trunk Western panel sided twin bay hopper damaged. I can't quite read the car number; maybe GTW 70162? I've always liked these panel sided hopper cars and this is the first time I knew that the GTW ever had them on their equipment roster.

Keep up the great restoration work on the 6167.

Les

Yep, 6167's engineer was the only death in the incident.

Looking at my hi-res scans of the photos, the number on the GTW twin bay hopper looks to be 106762. Maybe that was only one of those hoppers the GTW had....

Nice job on the work you're putting into 6167!

With the amount of info on the wreck I didn't see mentioned what became of 6166. Was it repaired like 6167 and returned to service? I know you're sites focus is of 6167 but you may want to just add a sentence or so of 6166's fate for the curious.

I have just learned that the UCRS (Upper Canada Railway Society) private car Nova Scotia was recently moved from the defunct restaurant in Orillia, ON that it used to be a part of, to the John Street Roundhouse in Toronto.

This private car was the very one used on a number of 6167's excursions in the 1960's.

Thanks, Jeff! Other than the little guy having run of the railroad yard, I'd call that a heck of a series of film clips.

Tomorrow we are planning to apply the decal's to 6167's tender as well as on the side of the cab.

Also worth mentioning is that Saturday, July 6 marked the 70th anniversary of 6167's head-on collision with CNR 6166 in Montmagny, Quebec, which resulted in the death of 6167's engineer Joseph Levasseur, and the injury of a number of passenger's on Train No. 1, The Ocean Limited, and the crews of both trains. Eerily, both the derailment in Quebec and the Asiana 777 crash also happened on July 6.

As advertised, we applied the lettering and decals to CNR 6167, and I've updated my website accordingly.

Here is the page on the process of applying the decals:

http://www.trainweb.org/j.dimech/journal/130711.html

And another summarizing the everything else done to the locomotive so far this summer.

http://www.trainweb.org/j.dimech/journal/130503.html

And a teaser.

(Note, I wasn't able to upload all of my photos to the website, that should be resolved in a few days)

As an aside, I should mention that now that the design for the Maple Leaf Herald has been computerized, making new 36" decals would be fairly cheap (creating the artwork was actually the most expensive part of the job). Further more, I suspect that having smaller versions made for diesel locomotives and passenger equipment would be failry simple as well.

Congratulations on the job of "putting the miles back on" No.6167. She looks fantastic.
I remember seeing and hearing her in action on the Dundas Sub and lower Fergus Sub., and waiting in the rain for the famous double header with No.6218 as it passed our farm near Brantford. The old gal even sounded ready for retirement at the time as the clanking from her rods was very prominent on the level running at some speed past our place!
Best wishes for the future.
Thank you.

Did you ever photograph her or collect any tickets or programs etc?

I've been working on detailing all of her trips, which I've been doing here:

I've got piles of stuff to add to it, just not time to do it.
