And I thought I was the only guy who likes steam cleaning dirty railroad stuff...

Sandblasting, that's another one, especially with an air-supplied hood on a hot day. Keep the blast pot full and mind the hose for me, and I'll go for hours. I love to see the rust and old crud coming off.

I always enjoyed steam cleaning and needle chipping for the same zone-inducing reasons. it was nice to be able to watch the crud go away.

Nice job by your team Howard. Coach looks very nice. Was this the one that got the new synthetic roof recently?

No, the new EPDM membrane roof car is 4992. When that one comes in for paint in a few years, it goes back to being 5089. The 5114 should be getting a roof in about 3 years (at least that's the plan).

Thanks for the compliments. The crew put a lot of effort into this one.

Fantastic job!!! Just out of curiosity, what does one of those CNs weigh, as compared to a DL&W Boonton or a CNJ?

I always found the monthly chore of cleaning out a (coal fired) firebox and blowing out the flues to be strangely relaxing.

So is there a chart posted somewhere correlating 49XX series commuter coaches with their original numbers?

I obtained the detailed roster info from the large and excellent book "Canadian National Railways Annotated Historical Roster of Passenger Equipment 1867-1992" published by Bytown Railway Society in 1995. There is also a second companion volume, with additional material. These books are a must-have for anyone interested in CNR cars.

The car weights are in the 140,000-142,000 lb range (stencilled on the center sill).

I hate prepping something for painting, the marking and whatnot (ten times more hate when it's a model, where the marking has to be much smaller and tighter), but yeah, when that even color is covering up just like you want, there's that nice even (if you do it right) field of virgin color going over an area that probably looked very poor and now looks new. Few things give you the same level of satisfaction.

And I want to have that feeling ... as rarely as possible! LOL!

I hate prep, who doesn't. I also hate painting. It is either incredibly time consuming or incredibly hazardous. Hence, every subsequent year that thing doesn't need paint, I get that wonderful feeling.

I think you're right. Nice facility and a great job on that unit. Is that where the Heritiage locos were painted earlier this year?

As a volunteer on that project I early on submitted to the suggestion box a recommendation to purchase one of these systems http://en.lpi-inc.com/applications/Paint-Finishing the increase to worker productivity would have made for a great return on investment. So far I have been horribly disappointed perhaps when Howard sees that NS video he will change his mind?

While we were at it it would also make sense Howard if you add one of their sand blasting stations to wishlist; http://en.lpi-inc.com/applications/Blast-Booth-Room/BL-Blast-Media-Blast-Booth-Lift

Oh well it is fun to dream.

Anyone know what the cost of sending a car out to a pro-shop with all the above equipment to get painted runs around?

The paint booth shown in the NS video is located at JBS-where the heritage units were painted. This facility dates from the Conrai l days.

Well, here's to report, latest progress on our CNR coach 5114:

The letterboards are "CANADIAN NATIONAL" on both sides, the interior work, trap work, 3 of the 4 sets of corner handrails are on, vestibule doors hung (3 of the 4), trucks stenciled with car number and wheel numbers, car has its number in 6 places, 3 of the 4 corner maple leaf heralds are on. The touch up of the stripes, stripes, stripes goes on and on and on..... might have that finished this weekend.

It will be a while until the glaciers recede enough up here in NW Connecticut for us to get 5114 out of the shop for a decent daytime portrait. Maybe around mid-late March? 5114 is scheduled to operate in revenue service on March 30.

She's gorgeous, Howard!

I can't wait until we can get our fleet of CNR heavyweights up to snuff at RMEO, but these photos of your work will help inspire our volunteers and, hopefully, supporters. Our cars have a long way to go to look like 5114.
