Secondhand report from "Altoona Works" on Facebook indicates that Norfolk Southern has acquired longtime National Railway Equipment (Dixmoor and Silvis, Ill.) denizens CN F9A's 9177, 9164, and a third unit.....

Hey, I'll believe that over some Big Boy rumor any day.

Update from the same Facebook account:

Quote:
The three units coming from NRE were reported incorrectly. They're now confirmed to be two F7As and an F7B.

First up is former C&NW F7A 407, that's been relettered as SOU 407.

Second is former CP Rail F7B 1019, it has been relettered as SOU 1019.

Finally, there's former CN F7A 9177, it has been relettered as SOU 9177.

Info courtesy of Kenneth Larson and is confirmed in UMLER.

Supposedly, they'll become NS 4272-4274 after rebuild. All three will require extensive rebuild, including upgrade to EMD 645 engines as was done to the current quartet of NS "Executive F's". the CP B-unit is reportedly only a road slug at this point. The 407 has already had a hole cut in the engineer's side rear section.

If it is NS's intention to make the B unit a locomotive then its correct number was CP 4462. If on the other hand it is to be a slug or a HEP car then 1019 would do.

Juniata is a magical place. None of that is a problem for them. I'm betting they'll come out as three fabulous locomotives. I would love to tour the shops some day. Do they ever have open days there?
