EMDs 25,000th Locomotive L&N GP30 1014

I am cataloging a photo collection and there are slides of EMDs 25,000th Locomotive, L&N GP30 1014. They are of a good sized dog and pony show with other locomotives, dixieland band and ribbon cutting.

Also there is a 4-4-0 #3 (The General?) running around with one coach making lots of smoke.

The locomotive L&N GP30 1014 has a build date of 10-1962 and the processing date on the slides is 1-1963.

Anybody know where the party was, and the date?

My educated guess is the Louisville shops (where the General lived for a while). And what is that behind the two gentlemen shaking hands?

How about a EMD export locomotive on shop trucks.

Oh, yeah, you asked "where."

La Grange, Illinois. (Well, technically the EMD *plant* was in McCook, no matter what their mailing address might have said.....) W&A 3 steamed from Louisville to Chicago and then west on the Burlington to La Grange.

That explains the shots of the General at what looked like to me Chicago Union Station.

My grandfather worked for the L&N President at the time, Mr. Kendall. When he left the L&N to go to the Clinchfield or SCL, he gave my grand dad several items that commemorated the day.

I would love to see all of the slides that your collection holds of that day.

I have the brass reverser, engraved with the date, EMD 25000 locomotive, that Mr. Kendall used to back it out of the plant

I have an O Scale cast paper weight It is pewter in color and not painted.

I also have an N Scale replica of the locomotive, also made out of some type of metal, that appears to be some type of desk ornament. It is also undecorated, but does have Electro Motive engraved on one side of the base, along with 25000 locomotive on the other side.

I will put some pictures up soon.

So needless to say these engines are right up there next to the SD40-2 as my personal favorites to run. I can't help but think of the history when I show up for work and I have a Gp30 as the "Slug" on my local run for CSX.

If that was #25,000, what was #1? Does 1014 still exist in some form?

I'm pretty sure 1014 has gone to locomotive heaven. I think L&N 1030 is the only one left in original form.
