Does anyone have a source for bigger than normal flat head slotted steel wood screws? My hardware store can order up to #18x3". I want something in the #20-24 range x4".

The largest McMaster sells are #18 x 5. Part number 90006A361. They do sell 4" long as well. Larger than #18, and I think you'll have to go to lag screws. Lag screws can be converted to flat heads be heating and beating them into a countersunk hole in a steel plate, then sawing a slot. This works well, but I wouldn't want to do a thousand.

Try marine hardware dealers. They deal in all sizes of wood screws for wood hulled boats. They also deal in brass, stainless and zinc coated. Oversized heads are also used in boat construction

David,

Can't help with the screw, but please post another update on your restoration of the car tht you are rebuilding! The other articles were first rate!

Good idea. Jamestown Distributors has #24 x 4 screws, but in bronze, not steel. Part # FSBWSFH24X4

Post subject: North Texas Traction #25
PostPosted: Sat Oct 19, 2002 9:58 pm

On a recent Amtrak trip from Boston to Tucson and return, I was walking on the station platform at Ft. Worth and was surprised to see four passenger trains in the station as well as a freight nearby. Even more surprising was to see North Texas Traction #25 (St. Louis, 1913) on display beside the station, looking very good. Five years ago, Andrew D. Young reported that this car and #411 had been used for residential purposes and had been brought to Ft. Worth for restoration and display. Does anyone know whether the interior as well as the exterior was restored on #25 and who did the work? What is the status of #411?

Thanks for any information. Bob Reich
