It might be worth pointing out that there is no reason to expect that the Trust did any damage to the boxcar or filled it to the brim with stuff. It was accepted in good faith and was to be used as a shop space. It was welcomed by the Trust and the town, and it was cared for.

And that is fair. In this particular case I wasn't picking on Pemberton; I assumed every boxcar at every railroad museum is filled with stuff, because virtually all of them are. I was unaware of the degree to which it had been kitted out as a shop; notably the one at Noblesville, Indiana. (really a reefer; better yet.)

The PTHT, myself included, greatly appreciated the donation of this car. The Trust spent $10,000 to move the car to Pemberton, and I contributed to that.

From the beginning it was resolved that the car would be used as a wood shop, and would not be used for storage of anything not relevant for that purpose. So far as I know we did that. I only qualify that statement, because I was very sick at the end of the fall of 2009 and did not see the car myself during the last weeks before it got too cold to continue working.

The air brake equipment and rigging was removed from the bottom of the car for the move, and is still stored inside. There was enough room inside that this did not get in the way of using the car for a shop. It was intended that the air brake equipment would be reinstalled on the bottom of the car in 2010, but events intervened.

The only thing incomplete about the exterior of the car is a lack of any lettering. I favored lettering the car to it's original CRIP markings.

PTHT made the following modifications to the car:
  • The drill press was replaced with a larger one.
  • Florescent shop lights were installed.
  • Wiring in electrical conduit was installed for power to the shop tools and the lights. A shore power connection was supposed to be added, but I don't know if that got done.
  • Dark green mesh fencing was attached over the ladders to discourage casual climbing by visitors.

I reiterate that this car was to be used as a wood shop, not storage. Not even the lumber for the first project was stored in the car. (The lumber to build a PRR crossing watchman's box is stored in the section house, ready to go.)
