Continuing the visit to North Lake, here are a couple of steam locomotive tender photos.
The first two show a tender sitting on trucks. I assume that this is the tender for LS&I 2-8-0 number 21, although I don't know that for sure. The other photo shows a tender with LS&I lettering on the side although it is not on trucks, so this might actually be the 21's tender. Perhaps someone will be able to look at the two tenders and advise which one goes with the privately owned Consolidation at the Mid West Locomotive Shop. Or why there is a second tender there.

I only thought #21's boiler was there but clearly in your wonderful photos Les I can tell the entire engine is there. The bottom tender tank is to #21. If you go to page 1 of this topic Steven says the #21 owners are currently building a new tender frame at their shop. So I'm not sure what the first tender is, couldn't be 61's, maybe it's #16s? I know her frame and boiler left but I'm just spit balling.

Thanks to all of you for your wonderful posts of photos etc., especially you, Les! As I posted last time, I hope to meet with Steven next month and get my first up-close look at the North Lake property. From 1998-2002, I occasionally visited a postal history friend and buff who lived just outside of North Lake, so I drove through town a number of times but never realized KMRR was still in operation. So I missed out on something I now wish I hadn't missed. Still, I hope to get a feel for what used to be sometime next month.

The LS&I tender that is on trucks is ex-company service, hence the handrail, brake wheel and knuckle coupler replacing th drawbar. Though no numbers are visible, it is probably the X-27 or X-28 used in diesel fuel or steam supply service. The locomotive that pulled that tender no longer exists.

Thanks for that information. Along with what SPsteambuff says about the owners of LS&I #21 currently building a new tender frame (as originally reported by Steven), I wonder if perhaps they plan to use the frame from this X-27 or X-28 for the tender on the ground? I can't tell for sure if the two are the same length or not.

The LS&I tender tank that is on the ground was the one that came with the #21. It is the #18's tender and was swaped when the locomotive was moved to Laona in the late 80's. The second tender was last used to steam switch in the winter and had a steam boile in the coal compartment along with a #12 Nathan simplex with a hose and nozzel attached

On page 3 of this thread is a photo of the boiler of LS&I #21 sitting up on a flat car with a photo of the shop in the background. I am sure that the Shop was locked.

woah! Why did Saginaw Timber #2 spend time at the Kettle Moraine?? And I love the photo of #21 Les!
I'm hoping Steven can chime in on these questions but what does #21 need and are you doing any of the work to her? And is there any formal agreement for storage of her when completed in the future? Thanks!

The Saginaw #2 was owned by son in law of the founder Richard H. That is why it was there. This was not a museum in traditional sense. It was and is a privately owned operation. Obviously there are "museum pieces" on property. The #2 bounced around for a few years till it ended up privately owned and leased to Mid continent for the last 30 years. Cheers, John.
