The OP has always had a problem with language, no doubt for a very good reason, no point in being snarky about it.

Looks like he's trying to figure out the dimensioning of the end plates for pulling the cylinder liner or head from a Alco 244 power pack. I certainly don't have the answer, but I bet somebody out there does.

Hopefully the OP and that person can connect up, and the 244 that the OP is working on gets back into running order.

I had trouble understanding this man's post before. I never made any remarks about him on-line, I ask someone who new him and I was told he is a very nice gentleman that had a "stroke". So, cut him some slack and leave your crude remarks to your self.

I'm happy to try and help him--I have at least two guys in my "Rolodex" who may be of use if someone else here doesn't answer, provided I can get a hold of them--but seriously, I could NOT figure out what he was asking, and I have too much experience dealing with "illiterate" writers.

Sandy may be one of the snarkiest posters on this forum, but he wasn't snarky this time. His advice is dead-on.

Whatever difficulties Mr. P may have in this method of communication, it's hardly any reflection. If you think about it, pushing 29 buttons thousands of times on a machine while looking at a screen is a rather bizarre way to communicate. It should be no surprise that not every human is good at it. Fortunately in this day and age, we have lots of alternatives, e.g. Youtube videos. He might be a total wizard in Windows Movie maker or iMovie and make really good ones.

Sandy's advice to get some help writing the question is valid, if you can't understand what he's asking, you can't help him. Granted, there is a perfectly valid reason for the difficulty writing (there usually is) and simply making snide comments isn't helpful. However, an honest constructive suggestion could be beneficial.

However... Sending it to the original poster as a private message would have been a far better approach.

Owen, I think I understand what you're looking for. Let me know if I'm understanding you correctly.

What you're looking for is this tool which is used for removing the head & cylinder from an Alco 244. http://www.railswap.org has the tool, but it's missing some parts. You are looking for the dimensions of those missing parts. The missing parts are circled in the picture.



One part is the large bar which is supported by the hook at the top. The other missing parts are the eye bolts, and you're asking what the thread size on those eyebolts is.

If one of us has the drawings with the dimensions of those missing parts, or has the actual parts, you'd like them to email you.

Is that accurate?

I think the tool you describe will only hold the head at 45 degrees.

It will not (by itself) lift the head away from the block at 45 degrees.

Your crane or lift will have to move the head away at 45 degrees.

The studs will help guide it. I am assuming the engine block has studs to hold the head down. If not then you can just lift "straight up".

If possible you could also install a "low" and a "high" eyebolt (if tapped holes permit) and then use two "come-alongs" (cable winches) (one long one to the low eyebolt, one shorter one to the high eyebolt) to support the head at 45 degrees.

Looks like you have most of the details for a cylinder liner puller.

I mentioned 45 degrees, that was just an example, looks like the angle is more like 30 degrees away from horizontal. But with two cable winches you can adjust to any angle you need.

Someone Reach out to Howard P., I know the RMNE has a head lifter for a 244 that I believe was fabricated I could be wrong, I am pretty sure it was fabricated it May be Cheaper to have one made than trying to get a complete tool
