You can never have too much C&O Steam. The C&O should definitely commended for their efforts in an age when so many executives saw only scrap dollars in the retired steam power. 1189 would have been a marvelous example of a typical midwestern freight hog. Even two more Kanawhas would have been great, too. We really do need to get a C&O Kanawaha on the path to operating condition. Nothing would be better than to line up a hot 2700 with 765 and 1225. That would be spectacular. I'm holding out hope that HVRM will ultimately mount a fundraising drive to get 2789 fully restored!

Never too much C&O steam? Oh, yes, how much I agree with that. . .

Not only was the 1189 the last C&O 2-8-2, she was the last USRA heavy Mike. Several light 2-8-2s from various railroads are still around, both original USRA and later copies. But the big girls are extinct.

Just out of curiosity, how does a USRA heavy 2-8-2 and a Chinese JS class 2-8-2 match up?

I believe 2772 was the other locomotive scrapped. Here she is in Russell, KY at about the same time. Also, here is a photo of the 2-8-2, 1189. It's the only photo of 1189 in the set, and not a very good one as it does not show the whole locomotive.

David -

Sorry to bring up this old thread, but just happened to notice that the photo of the "other" C&O Kanawha is NOT the 2772, but an additional photo of the 2770, with the slide reversed! Wonder if you actually had a photo of the other C&O 2-8-4 being scrapped then?

Thanks.
