After being asked what we plan to display at our proposed museum, other than the 4449, 700, and 197, I was surprized at not only the quantity, but
the quality of the locomotives "in family" that have been mentioned availible for loan or to visit the museum on some kind of basis.

This list includes, but not limited to:

Steam:

Mt. Emily 3 truck Shay
Santa Maria Valley 2-6-2

Diesel

SP: SD9, GE 70 ton, 4 wheel Davenport (orig SP Brooklyn Shops switcher)

GN: F7, NW5

SP&S: FA

Portland Terminal S2

Also Portland Traction SW1 #100, the very locomotive that not only put the 4449, 700, & 197 into Oaks park in 1958, but also one by one pulled them out of thier display sight.

And yes, the "orphan" NKP painted PA and RSD5

None of these locomotives is owned by the ORHF, and as many are privately owned, the list can change.

There are also other "display steam locomotives" that have been mentioned as potentials should a facility come to be. To tell an acurate "steam story", we need more than three passenger locomotives. We need a Willamette! (Built in Portland)

Current drawings of our facility include not only the current Brooklyn Roundhouse, but also a larger "brick" Roundhouse sharing the turntable. The ORHF has had some very important meetings with city "power people" and potential neighbors, and the talks have been going very well.

Now all we have to do is help raise the millions it's going to cost to build "The Dream".

You folks are off to a great start out there and I wish nothing but luck in getting going. You mention a lot of equipment under private ownership, how do you handle this to avoid the pitfalls that have appeared in a lot of the posts below ??

If you want to invite outside owners to display or operate their engines at your museum then be aware that an awaful lot of money has been spent and wasted on lawsuits between museums and the owners of private cars and engines that have been on the museum property.

"There is no such thing as a free lunch" applies to museums as well as anywhere else. Good work getting a better place to operate the 4449 and whatever else ends up in the area!

The issue of private owned equipment is no doubt a touchy one. One one hand we don't have the funds to go out and pursue locomotives to be restored, but yet many of the most important locomotives that we'd like to incorporate in our vision are "in family". We are trying to work out a plan that benefits everyone and at the same time not become heated dry storage for privately owned items. We are watching other istitutions on how they address this issue.

One thing we found out at a recent meeting is that many of the people have no recolection of operating steam, but they remember the streamlined F's and such. When mentioned that we have "in family" equipment of that era currently operable and in a restored condition, the conversation of what our mission is slowly creaps into "I remember those as a kid!". The "glory" of the sites we are pursuing is that they do not allow any "junk" to be on the grounds. The cental city location is small, but big enough to put together a nice "museum complex". The name of the game is quality over quantity. Our reputation here at Brooklyn is also that of operating equipment. With that goal, it opens the door for revolving displays and very little static. You can only visit museums a few times before they bore you with the same old stuff in the same old place.

I'm sure it has been mentioned, but getting Peggy out of the weather and under cover would be a good thing. I know the director of the Oregon Forestry Center wants to get her under cover and restored (again). Perhaps Prineville is a better place for Mt Emily.
