I will point out what I believe to be different:

1. - Drifting Valves
2. - Sander lines are run underneath the jacket, instead of over the sheet metal
3. - Headlight visor
4. - The feed water heater has a covering sculpted to fit the smoke box, the 4501's is squared off.
5. - The whistle on the 4518 is on the fireman's side
6. - The smoke box door on the 4518 appears a bit larger than the one that had been on 4501.

And...of course...I don't see candlesticks and an eagle mounted...but that wouldn't be "hysterically" accurate anyway.

Good morning :)

<buzzer sound>

All good differences. We have yet to run the sand pipes so those could still go under the jacket. We've discussed the cylinder protection valves but we'll install Okadee cylinder cocks instead, 4501's whistle is also on the fireman's side, and the smokebox door is the same size.

The difference in the top of the feedwater heater is related to S type versus SA type. 4518 has an S type and 4501 will have an SA type.

The headlight visor and eagle are all detail items.

The correct difference has yet to be spotted. Another clue - the difference is 19 inches.

It appears the cab on 4501 is longer. Did the Southern lengthen the cabs when they applied stokers?

Dennis nailed it.

The 4518 has a shorter cab which we believe is from a Class Ms-4 locomotive (heavier 2-8-2). The shorter cab puts the turret outside the cab. I can't speak for why Southern did this as there could be several reasons. I am now looking at pics of other modified Class Ms-1 locomotives to see if they have the shorter cabs.

I have marked a chalk like on 4501's cab to show how much it needs to be shortened but it's not going to happen right now.

I kept looking back and forth at various shots I have of the 4501 vs. the 4518...and it was hard to tell...my next guess was going to be a slightly lengthened smoke box...and then maybe the cab would have been my third attempt.

It is kinda fun to play...what is different...and BTW...personally I think the sand lines would look wicked cool under the jacket.

Just sayin'

Handrails around the smokebox are different as well...This ole girl is going to be fun to run once she is back together. Maybe NS will let her charge The Loops when she comes out...

Ray

I have a couple of photos in my possession where the turret is outside the cab
4505, 4516, 4529, 4534, 4541, 4544, 4570, 4610. I can add more, but I think I have represented this feature well!

Btw, does anyone know what that small cylinder mounted near the cab roof on the fireman's side is?

I really appreciate those pics. It appears the shorter cabs were put on many of the locomotives that received the feedwater heater system. The additional steam supply for the injector is visible in many of the pictures as well.

We are still looking close at the device in front of the firemans side of the cab.

Would that device be the muffler for a continuous Blowdown system? Perhaps NALCo or a Signal Foam Meter?
