According to the Museum Of The American Railroad's website, UP 4018 has been moved out of the fairgrounds and is currently sitting on the fair park spur. It is scheduled to be moved this Sunday.

It says they're planning for this coming weekend. I'd bet they do it Saturday so there is always Sunday open if there are problems.

Pretty cool that M160 was used for some switching. I wonder if they used it for the 4018.

Part of the route they use is also used by the Trinity Railway Express, so they're more or less restricted to Sundays when the commuter train isn't running. Another option is making the move in two parts with the locomotive laying over in Irving before going to Frisco.

They have an ex CN F-7 painted up in Santa Fe colors that is operable. That might be the motive power used in switching the Big Boy out of there.

Hopefully someone can catch this on video or picture. When's the last time a Big Boy moved a lengthy distance like this?

I can still remember when the 4012 moved to Vermont. It came from Sayre, PA on the Lehigh Valley to Owego, NY then switched over to EL tracks to Binghamton. I believe I have a clipping from our local newspapers with pics of it. I'll have to look.. Guess I'm giving away my age now....

I'm sure J. David Conrad could generate an epistle on the logistics of that move.....

Indeed I can Matt:
Of the 14 special trains needed to transfer the Steamtown collection from Bellows Falls, VT to Scranton, PA; the one with No.4012 was the easiest.
We were unable to get the driver brakes functioning due to lack of clearance under the boiler to work on them, so it was moved with working brakes on the trailing truck and tender plus some idler cars. A diesel locomotive was tacked onto the end of the consist just in case the Big Boy came uncoupled from its tender.
Since this would be a high visibility move, our FRA inspector, Paul Furman was assigned to ride along (much to his annoyance, he had ridden along on a couple of the first moves and found them pretty boring).
As I recall, when the 4012 arrived at Steamtown, it had come in from the North, so some folks were worried about it leaving going South out of town, around the wye and through the tunnel at Bellows Falls so we walked it through them.
The "deal" we had with the FRA for the move was that all safety appliances had to be in good condition, brakes had to work, 20MPH speed restriction and movement during daylight only. Guilford had to work that criteria into their planning and scheduling.
Everything ran cool and nothing fell off so it was an uneventful trip.
The high point was that we spotted 4012 on Tunkhannock Viaduct, put it up on rail skates, and uncoupled the diesels and idlers so someone could fly over in a helicopter and take pictures.
It didn't like the wye near Bridge 60 too much, but we greased the flanges and got it onto Steamtown trackage without incident.
Be well,
J.David

I'd much like to see a photo of 4012 on the viaduct, if any are around

Looks like the CN/ATSF F-7 was used to move the 4018 out of the fairgrounds according to the picture posted with the latest update on Thursday. It appears to be set to move on Sunday depending on traffic.

POSTPONED!

Due to a derailment on one of the rail lines along the route, Sunday's movement of the Museum's "Big Boy" steam locomotive #4018 has been cancelled. We will post a new move date once it is established. We regret any inconvenience this may cause to our stakeholders and supporters. We are very appreciative of all the efforts put forth by the local railroads as we continue to move the collection from Dallas to Frisco.
