Does anyone know what is currently happening with the shark unit?

Nothing. It (and its mate) sits quietly locked away in a very secure facility in Michigan. Blame the "railfans" that had to break in and steal replica builder's plates and (real) manuals.

Back in the day, I would have thought that 2400 tons on level ground should have been a piece of cake for one of them...after all, I could name off several "older" locomotives ( 630, 4501, 587, 90, 5 ) which could have walked off with that tonnage without breathing hard on level ground. However...none of the locomotives I just mentioned can run 90 unless someone made a horrible mistake.....

I think my all time favorite Trains article was from June of 1986: Ed King,s "Disaster du jour, and other stories". In my mind railroading is as much about the people and how we ran things as it is preserving the equipment. It also highlighted what I refer to as the "can do" era of railroading vs. the "can't do" era we seem to be in these days.
