"Probably another $70,000 or so to make 662 run"

After all those years of exposure, I'm going to indulge a purely visceral reaction and say "that's all? That seems remarkable, or did you do some prelimuinary stuff in the cosmetic restoration to make an operational restoration possible?

As far as I'm aware. The Museum of the American Railroad's VO-1000 is in "running condition". What I mean by that is a few years ago during the state fair of Texas, we managed to get it started and let it run for a few hours. The locomotive used to be the main switching power until it developed an issue with a traction motor. It will move under it's own power, but that's about it.

I found a recent photo of #1107. Looks excellent in fresh black paint. A museum exhibit to be proud of. (link)

Also ran across an old photo of 1107 in its original Colorado & Wyoming paint:

Gary:
I have seen photos of the upper half of #662's prime mover and it looked good, but I am guessing that after 50 years of exposure the engine crankcase was full of water ? What condition is the crankshaft and bearings in ? Is this the area of#662 that would require the most work/money ?
Tired of working on Baldwin's !??? After all the GREAT work you guys did on#662 how is that possible !
I can't wait to see #663 when you guys get done.

Pretty snappy color scheme, too...

I have no idea idea what the actual story is behind the CW paint scheme, but I like to think that the paint scheme is a thoughtful reminder of the first president of the Valley Railroad, a predecessor to the CW merged in in 1942(just a few years before 662 and 663 were built).

There is a VO-(660? 1000?) near Lewistown Pa along with an ALCO S1 and some of those 36 ft ex USATC wood box cars...Does anyone even know of these? Any plans?

I strongly suspect that he refers to Burnham, Pa. north of Lewistown on the former PRR Milroy Branch, at a scrapyard next to the Standard Steel complex there.

The scrapyard in question is/was owned by Kovalchick Salvage. That's probably enough to tell you your odds right there.

On the other hand, I believe one of the Baldwins that was at Standard Steel (now worked by an EMD switcher or three) is now at the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona. I'm half a continent or more away from my notebooks, but if you're dying to know, look for a Standard Steel Baldwin.

The locomotives in Burnham are WM VO-660 105 and a B&O S2.

I'm sure Larry will be establishing a one-man operation to save those engines soon.

Yes those are the engines I refrenced..I didn't want to give out too much info as I dont want to step on toes or hinder any plans. What do you mean by "odds"? I understand the link to the EBT but how does it affect these engine and other items stored here?

1106, 1107. parts of 1108 and 1109 all found their way to the Great Plains Railway in Seward, NE in 1974. After a very short life of less than a year, the railroad shut down and the Baldwins were scattered. I believe the 1107 is the only survivor.
I had the task of going to CF&I, the parent of the C&W, and getting all the spare Baldwin parts to ship to Nebraska.

The railroad(85 miles) was scrapped shortly thereafter.

SMS now owns the third Baldwin built, and only surviving round grill unit:

And yes, it still runs!

Look at that. The last Baldwin of its kind. Built in 1940. A quick glance at the year 1940 shows it was the year Hitler and Mussolini formed an alliance against France and England. That was a lifetime ago now!

Seeing this photo gives me a mixture of happiness and sadness. The first feeling is happiness that this locomotive is apparently "saved". But the feeling turns to sadness realizing this locomotive might end up as a stripped down hulk 20 years from now after use on the railroad. There seems to be a syndrome out there: saved today - junk tomorrow. I think about that a lot.
