Seeing this photo gives me a mixture of happiness and sadness. The first feeling is happiness that this locomotive is apparently "saved". But the feeling turns to sadness realizing this locomotive might end up as a stripped down hulk 20 years from now after use on the railroad. There seems to be a syndrome out there: saved today - junk tomorrow. I think about that a lot.

Although every last thing I said about the owner(s) of the Baldwin Sharks at the E&LS in Michigan in another thread applies equally here--absent written guarantees, anything can still happen--SMS is not just an individual, but a group of Baldwin fanatics finding a way to make their collecting habits and slightly irrational passion at least pay somewhat for themselves. As such, I'd have much more optimism for at least the opportunity for enduring preservation after use than I would the E&LS stash. And besides, the SMS guys are more "railfan-friendly," even staging "open days" for fans.
