General Steel Castings had at least three "No 1s" delivered from Whitcomb, each at a different location. The 1949 unit was a 50 tonner, 61092, 8/49, and it went to their Eddystone PA plant. the ones in back appear to be export units.

Posted this shot of a Whitcomb 80 tonner at RRPA.net; it's marked for Pantex Plant, which is NE of Amarillo; but is on the Santa Fe at Hereford TX. It appears as if it's former Navy; although its true identity eludes me for now.

From the looks of the diaphragm on the back end of the cab of the Whitcomb export units for Argentina, may we assume that they were meant to be run back to back? Also, any idea if any of these units still exist today?

Also neat to see that the units were shipped on Erie 6 wheel truck flat cars 7232 and 7233. Our museum is on the old Erie Railroad right-of-way in North Judson, so always like seeing Erie equipment in service. Sure would like to have one of those flats at Hoosier Valley!

Way back in 1972 Don Dover printed in Extra 2200 South what was probably the first good description of Whitcomb 65T designs. The Sept/Oct '72 edition (issue no.36)had a side profile of the familiar Army 65-DE-19A along with a good description of the type and list of original owners, of which there were only seven or so for 270 total Whitcomb-built 65 tonners during WWII.

One of these 65ton Whitcombs is available for donation now for someone who has the means to truck it or flatcar it from Iowa. Running condition.

Thank you very much Rich, I just received your email. Apparently the first one never reached my inbox. I will contact the gentleman tomorrow and go from there.

Very thrilled to find one of these rare WW II veteran locomotives and fairly close to Rochelle. Will try like crazy to get this one saved and brought back home where it was built. I wonder what happened to the original Buda engines, probably junked.
