There is a stretch of track in my town that the people who live around it want removed. They had a news report on the local TV showing the folks who say its an eyesore and they claim it is abandoned. The track runs in the center of a boulevard and I think it does get used, so naturally I think asking it to be removed is ridiculous.

How do you find out the RR that owns a particular line and if it is still used?

Library history room or tax records should provide the starting points if you don't know which railroad it is. How many do you have to choose from? Could just cold call every railroad in town and ask if there aren't more than 3 or 4.

This is a common problem, which proves if you want to see trackage saved, start early, before the anti-rail people get a toehold. If it is indeed officially abandoned through the ICC or STB, local governments may lay down so many restrictions that its reuse will become impossible. Where is this piece of track?

One place to check is the Rails to Trails site--At least HERE, they seem to have more info on who owns what, and its current status than the local courthouse does.

Go to www.stb.dot.gov home page and click on search. Click on "click here to search decisions", the other stuff will get you everything except what you want. Texas has a Railroad Commission, see if your state has the same. Go to www.up.com and browse through info they have and see if something helps. Stay away from the local stuff for now (no use in kicking over that anthill until you must). If the line is local, state or larger the info will most likely be found at the Surface Transportation Board url. Luck ta ya.

Forget running steam engines on THIS bit of track! If the NIMBY's do'nt like just the track, you will not stand a chance of them liking a steam engine (nasty noisy dirty smelly things) running on it! You will spend all your time fighting them. Find another place where the natives are friendly.
