Folks,

I have a project coming up where I need to re-pour some babbitt. I have the babbitt and tinning flux, but don't have any more casting putty for damming up my form.

I'm looking for a supplier for babbittrite or a comparable replacement. I've been told McMaster Carr carries it, but I'm not sure which casting compound is the right stuff as I'm not even sure what the old babbittrite putty was made from.

I have purchased babbitting putty from Mc Master in the past. I do not see it in their catalog, but call them. They have lots of items in stock that are not in the catalog. Another company you can try is Rotometals. They make soft metal alloys to your specs. With a 400 pound minimum. They also sell babbitting putty. Look at their web site at www.rotometals.com. They use to make a whole line of babbitting products, but you may have to call them as babbitting is probably as small part of their business now.

Babbittrite shut down due to not being able to get a key raw ingredient. After a few large industry's that used a lot of the stuff sent samples to a lab in an attempt to make there own they found out what the "key raw ingredient" was. That ingredient was asbestos which Babbittrite contained up to 40%. Wouldn't be surprised if the parent company ends up in a few lawsuits

Actually, that is the Babbitrite MSDS. The putty that Rotometals currently sells (MSDS here: https://docs.google.com/file/d/1cVA_OHT3fEyP3Dw-xlC8-98nvsag7qCdPIYr1OzttWEB9dGxerYPTFyHLa3q/edit ) contains crystalline silica, and glass fiber (better than asbestos, but still not the sort of thing you'd want to be using on a daily basis)

Thanks all! Rotometals is right here a few miles away from me. I knew they sold zinc anodes for ships, but I never knew they carried so much babbitt related materials.
