 Post subject: Penberthy Injector help.
PostPosted: Thu Nov 14, 2002 7:46 pm

Dear RYPN'ers;

As part of an overhaul, I'm looking at the Penberthy injector that is attached to our working 50 ton steam crane.

It was not reliable this season, leaving us with only one reliable injector.

A couple of questions:

1) can anybody give me information on working pressure, etc, of a "119" AutoPositive injector? We have downrated the boiler to 100psi.

2) I presume that a slight nick in the automatic overflow shutoff valve is ok; "theoretically" injectors should work without requiring this valve - but theory and what the Penberthy does can be two different things.

3) There is a valve from the delivery side to the overflow; the valve seat is loose. It needs to be removed to get at the overflow valve, but should it be loose?

I have to check the remainder of the piping to see if there are any problems - the one time I tried this injector this season, it would start to lift then immediately break; it certainly did make a nice hammering sound!

Thanks;

John Stewart
Ottawa.

dear john the autopositive is no longer made .parts are not available. i advise you to replace with a new or good use one that you can still get parts for. see. pen. cat. as injectors wear they get harder to make work right . that nick and loose part may matter in this case. regards bb

Hi,

Penberthy Auto-Positive injectors were designed to pick up at 75 lbs., higher than other models. They have to be clean inside, so you could soak in lye overnight and scrub it out. Lye will not harm bronze. Also make sure there are no air leaks in the suction piping.

Fix the nick.

As for buying an injector or parts from Penberthy, that would be prohibitively expensive. Go to a good steam show or check Ebay and you can get a good serviceable injector for 1/10 of the price penberthy would charge.

good luck

Tim

I don't know about Penberthy's but my limited experience with Sellers lifting injectors is they will work at 50psi. Nathan Simplex lifting injectors don't seem to like working under 120psi. This past season we installed new Schedule 80 delivery lines (between the injector and check valve) on our locomotive and all the dribbling and most of the hammering noises the injector used to make went away.

The others are right, the injector probably needs cleaning due to scale or water treatment deposits.

John
You might also boil out the delivery pipe with lye or replace the pipe. Scale can build up there and restrict the flow, causing the injector to fail.

John, the problem you are having with your injector is like a problem I had when I was making miniature injectors. Look for a suction leak on the delivery piping, valve, valve steam packing or union connections to the injector body. The injector does not produce much suction when it is trying to start, but when it does pick up, there is a very strong suction between the water control valve and the injector body. A minor suction leak will not prevent the injector from starting, but it will kill the injector instantly when it does start. Then the suction fails and the injector starts again. This is the hammering you hear.
The nick on the overflow valve could also be a problem, since suction is developed there as well, but a suction leak there should not kill the injector, but it will allow air to be delivered into the boiler, not what you need in your boiler.
What size injector is on your boiler? I have a new 1" Penberthy that may be what you need if all else fails. Let me know if my advise is of any help. Regards HG
