Anyone do the math on what NS is saving in taxes on the sale by donating this percentage, and why, if any, they chose to donate from an art sale rather than out of their PR or marketing budget persay. I'm sure there is a lot more to this than just funding 611.

If this is some part of a dark conspiracy, can we please have more of them? Thanks, Mr Moorman.

Does this donation cover the cost of the Lubritorium?

They still need another $1.5 million before work can begin.

I wasn't complaining, hey, good going NS. I hope, and believe that other large donors will step up now. Just wondering.

Hello? NS? Over here in Maine...? I'd like to have nice chat with you!

In all sincerity, Congratulations to "Fire Up 611", and thank you, Norfolk Southern for your vision, integrity, and devotion to history and heritage.

It's easier to get support once you are already perceived as winners....and this grant will certainly convince many potential grantors to pitch in and make it happen. I think we all have something to look forward to at this point.

While I am more than elated for 611, does anyone else out there wonder........what kind of art (especially this piece of.) draws nearly 4 million bucks? Just wow. I probably won't make 4 million in my lifetime. This guy makes an "art piece" that looks like someone got a little zealous with a spray can, and that can resurrect a steam engine? Wow.

Amazing how the NS steam pendulum has swung again...

I don't wonder at all.
People fail to understand often that art draws people with some really deep pockets, and it's far more popular than any RR anything ever will be. There's an art museum (and usually a well-funded and attended one) in almost every majory town in the country, you sure can't say that about train museums, now can you?

One advantage Art has is that most of it is portable & liquid.

Making a run for the border with John Law on your tail is hard to do carrying your Country Estate on your back.

But a couple of Picassos in a backpack ;-)

I figure NS would chip in some money into rebuilding N&W 611. Realistic, IF the rebuild is done correctly N&W 611 will be running within 3-5 years period. Examples: MILW 261 & PM 1225. Both these locomotives went to sleep back 2009 and woke up again in 2013. ^_^

If more large donors come in (and they have been courted, secretly) 611 should be on the way to restoration this coming spring. With what little 611 needs to return to operation- new flues, 1472 day inspection, engine truck work, and a few other details- she might be ready for test runs by next fall. Her timetable suggests several months to a year for restoration. This is a locomotive that has the benefit of being properly "put away" after she was last operated, and so has been preserved in very good condition.
