Surfing around, I note that the former Steamtown Carnforth site in the UK is apparently now closed and privately owned, with the buildings and structures deteriorating. Apparently the site is used for private restoration and maintenance work only. Can anyone elaborate on this? I believe Steamtown was one of only two or three remaining roundhouses in the UK and am surprised more effort hasn't been put forth to save it. What's up over there?

This Web page provides a fairly clear account of recent events.

Last time I checked, Steamtown Cranforth is owned by a company called West Coast Railways. They operate or operated the "Jacobite" summer season trains on the William-Fort Mailaig line.

One of the more interesting preservation miracles in the UK has been the Barrow Hill roundhouse. A former LMS facility, the site went from near demolition, to being one of premier railway preservation sites in the UK. The group that is restoring and operating the site has managed to secure the loan of several appropriate pieces of equipment.

The Barrow Hill Engine Shed group is good proof that authentic roundhouse facilities are not impossible to save, as many in our field believe. Once they started making progress on the buildings, they had no trouble attracting appropriate equipment to fill them with.
