FOUND IT!!!!

A Yahoo search for RS3 4075 got me a link for the shortlived JKL RR out of Monterey Indiana, with pictures of 4075, as well as 1689: http://www.tamr.org/Andy_Inserra/jkl.htm

Glad to find out my memory is still functional!

Jeff.

Jeff -

Good memory. Actually though, Ray Kammer and his partner, ran the tourist train out of Monterey, Indiana as the Indiana Erie Railroad. Operated over a section of the old Erie Railroad from Monterey up to (but not in to) North Judson. At that time, the short line railroad that was operating the line was the Tippecanoe Railroad which was owned by the grain elevator in Andy's photographs. Shortly thereafter, the grain elevator changed hands and the new operator renamed the short line operation as the JK Line. He didn't want tourist trains on the railroad and Mr. Kammer had to find a new location and eventually went east to the Western Maryland Scenic.

It should be noted here, that at the time of the Indiana Erie operation, the railroad museum in North Judson was just getting started. In early 1988 it moved its steam locomotive (C&O 2-8-4 #2789) first to Monterey, and then later was given the old Erie right-of-way (no trackage) in North Judson because the big Berk got in the way when grain trains were being switched in Monterey. Kanawha #2789 was then moved to North Judson, arriving there in June of 1988, sitting at the very end of the old Erie track at Main Street in town. Receiving an old road crossing with rail from member Dan Siple that once was on the Pennsy in Hebron, Indiana, the museum installed that old road crossing in Main Street and thus onto its property. Since that first crossing, the railroad has relaid track in North Judson and even eventually acquired a portion of the old Tippecanoe/JK Line short line when that railroad itself was abandoned many years later by a third owner of the grain elevator. Earlier this year the Hoosier Valley Railroad Museum celebrated its 20th anniversary of arriving in North Judson.

The mention of the CC&O in Michigan reminded me of another mystery. CC&O was said to have had an RS-3M, former AMTK 106, that they had gotten from an outfit with a name like Trans-Dyne or Transdynamics. I had asked about this on one of the "foamer forums" some time ago, and never got any sort of an answer.

Howard has told me that when he was out there with the 1508, he didn't see the RS-3M. Does anyone have any information on this one?

Wow....I go out of town for a couple of days and miss all kinds of good stuff...

After the IRM deal and auction, the 4075 was shipped to Monterey,IN for use on the short lived Indiana Erie tourist railroad that ran during 1989 between Monterey and North Judson,IN. B&K was the operator.

In 1991, B&K shipped the two RS units and a recently purchased FPA-4 to Cumberland to operate the Western Maryland Scenic. The first part of the year, the 199 (4075), 1689 , and 305(6771) all shared duties. In later years, they also added the 800 (6780) and 306 (6793). The 199 was the last ALCO to leave Cumberland in the late 1990's and was shipped to Michigan, painted in Central scheme, and relettered to #1508. It operated for one season on the CC&O and was parked for a couple of years before being purchased by RMNE. The 106 (RS-3m) also ran with the 1508 for the one season. It was owned by Transdynamics and later sent to Huron,OH.

I'm not sure about the story regarding the NYC tender being held up by the 2707. I'm almost positive the 2707 was gone way before the NYC tender was purchased by WMSR.

A majority of my first experience in railroading invloved the 1508 (Sorry, it will always be the 1508 to me...). I'm glad it went to a good home.

Thanks, Jeff. That "after" photo is more recent than my earlier searches.

Do I get the award for resurrecting the oldest thread......

I started scanning and "better" filing of my photography work. Ran across a bunch of WMSR Alco/MLW era stuff... I post two.

#1689 & #4075 in the CSX Cumberland yard at delivery.

#4075 at the brewery lot before repainting.

It's good to read that the ALCO / MLW units from that era of the WMSR are still with us and either working or preserved.

It survived in Huron, Ohio until 2010, at least, having gone through TDIX reporting marks to BDLX (Delevan in Pittston, Pa.):

Here is a link to a photo my dad posted on a Steamtown page the other day of 4075 with 2317 in Scranton. Hope everyone is able to view this as I am not sure if there are any privacy settings:

The 4075 was indeed used on the Adirondack during the 1980 Winter Olympics, it provided steam to our shorter train.

Here is D&H 1508 coupled behind RS11 5008 on the northbound Adirondack at Albany, NY, on October 5, 1974. While I was looking forward to riding behind the PAs (which were on the southbound train this day), in retrospect, the RS11/RS3 combo on No. 69 was more unusual in passenger service.

At the time of the photo, PA's 16 & 19 were in Boise, ID being re-manufactured by MK.

1508 still sits stored with a bad traction motor but as time permits small repairs are being done to it.

Here it is in the shop getting welding done on the short hood closing up extra holes cut in it in the distant past. A stack cover was tacked on over the steam generator stack to keep the weather out too.

Greetings:
Poor 4075!
I recall running it on the regular passenger train in 1984 when 2317 was down for boiler washing. It had quite a time getting from Scranton up to the level section at Naug (sp-5).J.David
