What are your favorite crossing shanty designs? Pictures are highly appreciated! I have pictures of the original in Boyertown on Philadelphia Ave.

I would recommend reconstructing the structure that was once there. Someone should be able to draw some fairly accurate construction drawings from the photograph -especially if there are more photos of similar structures used by the railroad.

The North Shore depot in Milwaukee had a rather regular looking shack like an old toolhouse setup for the crossings, actually a track switch operator for the rather elaborate trackwork there. What was installed at your location?

The one that was there was a squat little structure with a pagoda style roof on it. Unfortunately, changes at that particular crossing exclude that sized building to be rebuilt. We are looking for something to build through the rest of the line.

We recently finished restoration of the N&W yard shanty from Christiansburg, VA. It's a fairly simple design and does not take up much real estate.

While it's actually a flag station, our CNR Nolan's Station at RMEO would make a good ground- level crossing shanty. Similar structures have been used in such a role:

I'm not familiar with your group or the station discussion, what prototype station was chosen? Once you know that, I'd go with whatever shanty design the same station or RR had there, to maintain a 'family' look...

If you can't shrink the pagoda design to fit, and there's no "classic" design for your line, generic and plain is as good as it gets. No point creating an architectural statement that doesn't belong, stick with FFF circa 1910.

If you're looking for an elevated style, the N&W design was a classic. They were normally sheathed in diagonal tongue & groove siding

When we were on the WC in 1988 with the 1522 I saw a dandy, I think in Neenah, WI, and thought I had a picture of it somewhere. It had arched windows.

Thanks everyone for the replies! We have pretty well settled on a design.

Now that the design has been settled on, thought I would post a photo of the crossing shanty at HVRM. This was originally on the New York Central and has been painted to match Grasselli Tower in the background, which was originally built by the NYC. We are not sure if this structure was originally a crossing shanty or not. It may have been a telephone shanty or had some other usage. But it's dimensions and design called for it to be a watchman's crossing shanty. The window facing the camera was put in, but otherwise, the shanty is as it appeared on the NYC. The late Ray Stokes, an HVRM member, did most of the restoration work on the little structure.
